Visitors can park in the high school parking lot. There is no charge and pictures are encouraged, but visitors are asked not to take anything. Because the demolition is set for later this year, the lockers have already been removed. “It’s going to look a little different to people from what they remember because they are going to be getting the building ready for demolition,” Brewer said. The auction can be accessed through the district’s website at northolmstedschools.org or the auctioneer’s website at auctionfactory.com. There are 400 items being auctioned with new items being added every week for a total of more than 1,200 items. Some of the items being sold include: pianos, a 1979 GMC truck, a 1994 van, a 1990 box truck, TVs, chairs, student desks, tables, office furniture, shelving, file cabinets, window air conditioners and basketball backboards. All items will be sold as is. The district anticipates raising $20,000 to $30,000 from the auction, said district Treasurer Robert Matson. Jones said thousands of people came and walked through the old middle school before it was torn down two years ago, “We’ve had people wanting more info about when they can see the high school again.” Photo by Jeff Gallatin Finishing touches are being done on the sixth- through 12th-grade school set to open Sept. 4. Westlake created a tax incentive obligation, and waived property taxes so the bond funding will be repaid by Crocker Park and American Greetings. “Unless they are unable to meet the obligation of tax incentives, there’s really no need for us to get involved,” Clough said. Prior to the layoff, American Greetings employed about 1,700 people at its world headquarters in Westlake. City Finance Director Prashant Shah planned to meet with representatives from American Greetings late last week. A list of questions was sent to American Greetings’ media representative requesting further information, but the company will release only a written statement about the layoffs. “This is a difficult decision, necessitated by the changes in the retail marketplace,” it reads. “Nevertheless, American Greetings retains a portfolio of great brands and products, and we remain committed to investing in research and product development to meet the needs of consumers and our retail partners. With these moves, we’re poised to continue our historic success and leadership in the greeting cards industry.” “Changes” are possible by the end of summer in the company’s production facilities, the statement said. Those employees laid off had the option of taking severance pay and use outplacement services to assist finding a new career. “The company is committed to treating all of its associates with respect and compassion,” the statement reads. Photo by Billy Ludt American Greetings laid off an undisclosed number of employees from its Creative Studios headquarters in Westlake June 19. Mayor Dennis Clough said he was told transfers are taking place to replace those employees who were let go.
