Description |
The fire engine was the first real pumper, an Ahrens-Fox, and was purchased at a cost of $7,000. It was capable of pumping 980 gallons of water per minute. Upon the new fire engine's delivery, the Sauer-built pumper on the Cadillac chassis was retired from service. Members of the Westlake Fire Department gathered in front of the fire department garage in 1938, posing with the new fire truck. From left to right, along near side: Bill Ulmer, Gil Burkey, George Jackson (holding hat), Pete Gorski, Harry Bailey, Sylvanus Phinney (wearing cap), Herb Aring, Howard Tanner, Fire Chief Frank Sauer. From left to right on back and far side: Bert Phinney, John Ingersoll, Mike Cornish, Nelson Bailey, Melvin Jenkins, and Mayor Campbell (in suit and tie). Behind the wheel is Dewey Bailey, Ed Hille seated beside him. |
